“MEMORIE BEATLESIANE e dintorni” by Rita Tunes e Enrico Pelos
Genova, Liguria, 1965, Londra… Liverpool… La nota dominante della vita dell’autrice è sempre stata, fin dall’età di 13 anni, la sua passione per i Beatles, nata durante il loro concerto nell’unico tour italiano di quell’anno che racconta in questo libro con passione ed emozione. Avendo vissuto e lavorato in Gran Bretagna per alcuni anni, proprio durante le celebrazioni di uno dei suoi jubilee, siamo stati veramente rattristati appena saputa la notizia. Giornata triste ed è come se ne andasse un po’ della nostra storia in Inghilterra in un certo senso… _ Having lived and worked in Great Britain for a few years, during the celebrations of one of her jubilees, we were truly saddened as soon as we heard the news. Astrid Kirchherr la fotografa dei Beatles se n’è andata. Riceviamo dall’ amico (ed attivissimo presidente dei Beatlesiani d’Italia Ass.) Rolando Giambelli la triste notizia che Astrid Kirchherr la fotografa dei Beatles è mancata all’età di 81 anni. Era nata ad Amburgo nel 1938 e fu nel 1960 che casualmente, girando per i locali notturni di Amburgo con Klaus Voormann, le capitò di ascoltare un gruppo musicale allora sconosciuto. E li fotografò. Il resto è storia. Sua fu l’idea del taglio dei capelli nel 1964 e sue alcune delle più belle fotografie dei Fab Four che hanno contribuito, insieme ad altri, a trasformarle in icone per tutti gli appassionati della loro musica nel mondo. We receive from our friend (and very active president of the Beatlesians of Italy) Rolando Giambelli the sad news that Astrid Kirchherr the photographer of the Beatles passed away at the age of 81. She was born in Hamburg in 1938 and it was in 1960 that casually, going around the Hamburg night clubs with Klaus Voormann, she happened to listen to a musical group then unknown. And he photographed them. The rest is history. She was the one with the idea of the famous hair cutting in 1964. She took afterward many beautiful photographs of the Fab Four who have contributed, together with others, to transform them into icons for all the fans of their music in the world. Ciao Astrid.
KRAFTWERK Florian Schneider, uno dei fondatori, se n’è andato.
Ricordo come fosse ieri la prima volta che li vedemmo alla Roundhouse di Londra.
Una musica indefinita (a quel tempo) la loro ma che affascinava e ti ipnotizzava. Mitici il loro Autobahn (1974) e Trans Europe Express (1976) con il quale si viaggiava sia in realtà che con la fantasia. Sia in autostop che in treno, quando ancora si poteva viaggiare e trovare amici con poche lire in tasca e le frontiere erano aperte più di oggi.
Schneider era uno dei due cantanti ed un polistrumentista: suonava il sintetizzatore, il vocoder, il flauto, il sax ed altri strumenti.
Dal vivo, il loro concerto era già allora uno show multimediale con computer e tecnologie digitali con suoni ed effetti visivi sempre raffinati e belli. Lo show, seppur con una sorta di futurismo retrò con abiti antracite, camicie rosse e cravatte nere e capelli che parevano brillantinati ti trasportava in una sorta di mix futur-vintage
Avevano già programmato di tornare in Italia per celebrare il 50° anniversario della loro arte musical-tecnologica.

KRAFTWERK Florian Schneider, one of the founders, has left.
I remember how it was yesterday the first time we saw them at the Roundhouse in London.
Their music was indefinite (at that time) but of the kind that left fascinated and hypnotized. Their Autobahn (1974) and Trans Europe Express (1976) were legendary, with which you could travel both in reality and with the fantasy. Both by hitchhiking and by train at tehat time you could still travel and find friends with a few lire in your pocket and the borders were open more than today.
Schneider was one of the two singers and a multi-instrumentalist: he played the synthesizer, the vocoder, the flute, the sax and other instruments.
Live, their concert was already then a multimedia show with computers and digital technologies with always refined and beautiful sounds and visual effects. The show, albeit with a sort of retro futurism with anthracite clothes, red shirts and black ties and hair that looked like glitter, transported you into a sort of future-vintage mix
They had already planned to return to Italy to celebrate the 50th anniversary of their musical-technological art.

Da Beatlesiani non potevamo, una volta a Dublino, andare a vedere, tra le molte altre cose interessanti che offre la città, un posto sconosciuto ai più. Esso rappresenta però per molti un ricordo particolare ed è il palazzo di quello che fu un tempo l’Adelphi Cinema in Abbey street, poco lontano dal monumento al grande irlandese Daniel O’Connel (che come vedremo in seguito è legato alla città di Genova…). Il cinema venne chiuso nel 1995 ed è oggi un grande parcheggio, ma il 7 Novembre 1963 qui suonarono i Beatles. Essi fecero due concerti rimasti nella storia della musica irlandese, anche perchè non bisogna dimenticare che tre del gruppo, John, Paul e George, avevano origini irlandesi e ne erano particolarmente orgogliosi…
As Beatles fans we could not, once in Dublin, go and see, among the many other interesting things that the town has to offer, a place unknown to most of the people but which has a special memory for many and it is the building that was once the Adelphi Cinema in Abbey street. It is not far from the monument dedicated to the great Irish Daniel O’Connel (who, as we will see later, is linked to the city of Genoa…). The cinema closed down in 1995 and is now a large parking lot but on Nov. 7, 1963, the Beatles played here. They played in two concerts which remain in the history of Irish music also because we must not forget that three of the group, John, Paul and George, were of Irish origins and they were especially proud of it…

“…A novembre fu la volta dei Pink Floyd! Si trattava del British Winter Tour del 1974 al Wembley Empire Pool. Come resistere ad una simile occasione? All’epoca, e negli anni precedenti, ascoltavamo soprattutto questa musica così innovativa e non stavamo più in noi dalla gioia di ascoltarli live. Prendemmo il biglietto come al solito, spedendo le sterline nella busta e ricevendoli quasi subito i (la Royal Mail funzionava anche in mezza giornata). Sul biglietto da noi conservato, leggo Row 0, seat 18, ed era la seconda entrata, di sopra in galleria, comunque si vedeva ed ascoltava benissimo. Fin dal percorso in metropolitana notavo la differenza tra il pubblico dei vari concerti: questi dei Pink Floyd erano per la maggior parte silenziosi e calmi. Nessuno aveva più di 30 anni ed il capello lungo e l’abbigliamento pittoresco erano d’ordinanza….”

How to resist such an opportunity? … We took the ticket as usual, sending the money in the envelope and receiving them almost immediately (the Royal Mail worked in half a day). The tcket we kept was for Row 0, seat 18, and was the second entrance, upstairs in the gallery, however, could be seen and listened very well. From the walk on the subway I noticed the difference in the audience of the various concerts: these Pink Floyd guys were for the most part silent and calm. No one had 30 years and the long hair and colorful clothes were to be the fashion of those times …. ”

“Al mio ragazzo era sempre piaciuto il cosiddetto Krautrock. Così era chiamata dalla stampa e critica angloamericana la scena musicale,costituita dai gruppi attivi in Germania negli anni ‘70. E così mi
raccontò di coloro che producevano in varia misura forme musicali nuove sulla base del rock progressivo o della musica elettronica tedesca (ad esempio Karlheinz Stockhausen) dei decenni precedenti. La definizione comprendeva gruppi spesso diversi tra loro, che spaziava dallo sperimentalismo alle influenze cosmiche dei Tangerine Dream e dei Cluster, alle anticipazioni di New Age degli Ash Ra Temple e dei Popol Vuh, ai “precursori” techno Kraftwerk fino al rock apocalittico degli Amon Düül. Alcuni componenti come Klaus Schulze furono tra i più

Il nome del gruppo sembra derivi dalle due parole “Tangerine Dream”, come omaggio agli “influssi onirici” della canzone “Lucy in the sky with diamonds” nel disco “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band” dei Beatles, dove si parla di“Tangerine trees”….

Infatti… recentemente siamo venuti in contatto con Beatlesfans americani, inglesi, e un po’ di tutto il mondo, veramente, e di tutte le età, che ascoltano, suonano, si divertono ancora con i nostri amati Fab4. I più anziani raccontano della pazzesca British Invasion che portò la Beatlesmania in U.S.A. nel 1964, descrivono i concerti, con la polizia che sorvegliava e le ambulanze che portavano via le ragazze svenute, alcune delle quali erano scappate di casa per assistere ai concerti, di quali davvero si udiva ben poco…ma si vedevano loro! Alcune venivano poi punite e rinchiuse in casa una settimana, ma ne valeva la pena!
I più giovani sono interessati a quell’epoca, ai costumi, alle mode, ai concerti ed anche curiosi di sapere cosa succedeva nelle altre nazioni, Italia compresa……….
Il 50enario negli Usa è già avvenuto, in Italia sarà quest’anno! Fine giugno…il lungo tour li portò a Milano, Genoa, Roma per poi proseguire in Francia, Spagna e , ad agosto, culminò nel mitico ed indimenticabile Shea Stadium Concert! (continua)…

“I HAVE FOUND MY STARS AT BALESTRINO” (musica di Bob Lind, testo di Rita Tunes ed Enrico Pelos, chitarra e voce di Rita Tunes)
… cantando e suonando una famosa canzone con foto e filmato da una delle più famose città fantasma nel mondo… Balestrino…
… Rita ed Enrico ritornano nel luogo che li ha visti camminare, esplorare, fare delle foto, (alcune delle quali nel filmato risalenti agli anni ’80) tanti anni fa insieme per le strade del borgo abbandonato …
Questa canzone (scritta nel 2012) … narra…. di Shel che a Balestrino ha trovato le sue “stelle”, e che molti anni fa cantava con i Rokes, su questa musica di Bob Lind (titolo originale “Cheryl’s going home”, 1966), la famosa canzone “Ma che colpa abbiamo noi” scritta da Mogol (Giulio Rapetti) e che diventerà, per un certo periodo, il “manifesto” hippie (in Italia) degli anni ’66-’67 (titolo al quale si ispirerà anche un film di Carlo Verdone).
Uno degli spettacoli di Shel si ispira alla Beat Generation americana ed è arricchito qua e la da esibizioni musicali. Shel Shapiro è Direttore Artistico della Rassegna “Stars A Balestrino”, affascinante Borgo della Riviera Ligure di ponente che gli autori (Rita ed Enrico) avevano già frequentato e percorso nelle sue antiche vie molti decenni prima. Essi colpiti dalla coincidenza che Shel organizzasse questi spettacoli proprio a Balestrino, scrissero spontaneamente questo testo… ricordando quando erano fan dei Rokes a metà degli anni ’60…
Un omaggio simpatico, ed affettuosamente spiritoso, ai Rokes ed in particolare a Shel ed a quello che hanno rappresentato per le generazioni dell’epoca; e dedicata a Balestrino ed ai suoi abitanti.

… Rita and Enrico returning to the place that saw them walk, explore and take pictures, (some of them in the movie are from the ’80s) many years ago along the streets of the abandoned village …
This song (written in 2012) is about Shel finding his “stars” in Balestrino and who sang with Rokes many years ago on the music of “Cheryl’s going home” (1966) by Bob Lind, the famous song “Ma che colpa abbiamo noi” written by Mogol (Giulio Rapetti) and was, for a time, the hippie “manifesto” (in Italy) in ’66 -’67.
In one of the shows Shel is inspired by the American Beat Generation and he enriched the show with some musical performances. Shell Shapiro is the Artistic Director of the “Stars in Balestrino,” Festival a charming village on the Western Riviera which authors (Rita and Enrico) had already visited and walked along its ancient streets decades ago. They where strucked by the coincidence that Shel would organize these shows just at Balestrino, and they spontaneously wrote this text … remembering when they were fans of the Rokes in the mid 60’s …
A nice and affectionately witty tribute, to the Rokes and to Shel in particular and to what represented for the generations of those times; and dedicated to Balestrino and its inhabitants.

REUNION BEATLES BAND AI “CANCELLI DEL CINABRO” DI GENOVA NEL BEATLES DAY 2014 Organizzato da Rolando Giambelli presidente dei Beatlesiani d’Italia

Essi li suonano splendidamente ancora oggi ed abbiamo avuto il piacere di ascoltarli, accompagnati per l’occasione da giovani e brave musiciste, dal vivo al BEATLES DAY 2014 – che si è svolto a Genova nei bei locali de “Il Cancello del Cinabro”, grazie all’organizzazione di Rolando Giambelli, presidente dei Beatlesiani d’Italia Associati e da sempre anch’egli validissimo musicista beatlesiano.

Un fenomeno, forse non molto conosciuto, è quello delle “Tribute bands” (e “Acoustic bands”) nate in diverse nazioni, e che sono composte da musicisti che portano in giro il repertorio delle canzoni dei Beatles.
Tra i gruppi italiani meritano sicuramente un posto d’onore i genovesi “Reunion” perchè sono stati i primi in Italia a suonare i Beatles nel 1982 (come tribute band). Essi li suonano splendidamente ancora oggi ed abbiamo avuto il piacere di ascoltarli, accompagnati per l’occasione da giovani e brave musiciste, dal vivo al BEATLES DAY 2014 – che si è svolto a Genova nei bei locali de “Il Cancello del Cinabro”, grazie all’organizzazione di Rolando Giambelli, presidente dei Beatlesiani d’Italia Associati e da sempre anch’egli validissimo musicista beatlesiano.

A novembre fu la volta dei Pink Floyd! Si trattava del British Winter Tour del 1974 al Wembley Empire Pool. Come resistere ad una simile occasione? All’epoca, e negli anni precedenti, ascoltavamo soprattutto questa musica così innovativa e non stavamo più in noi dalla gioia di ascoltarli live. Prendemmo il biglietto come al solito, spedendo le sterline nella busta e ricevendoli quasi subito i (la Royal Mail funzionava anche in mezza giornata). Sul biglietto da noi conservato, leggo Row 0, seat 18, ed era la seconda entrata, di sopra in galleria, comunque si vedeva ed ascoltava benissimo. Fin dal percorso in metropolitana notavo la differenza tra il pubblico dei vari concerti: questi dei Pink Floyd erano per la maggior parte silenziosi e calmi. Nessuno aveva più di 30 anni ed il capello lungo e l’abbigliamento pittoresco erano d’ordinanza….

In November it was Pink Floyd’s turn! It was the British Winter Tour 1974 at Wembley Empire Pool. How to resist such an opportunity? At that time, and in previous years, especially listening to such innovative music was unusual and we were looking forward to listening to them live. We took the tickets as usual, sending and receiving them in the envelope in the return for the pounds almost immediately (the Royal Mail also worked in half a day). On the ticket retained by us, read Row 0, seat 18, and was the second entrance, upstairs in the gallery, however you saw and heard very well. From the path on the subway I noticed the difference between the various concerts public: these were for the most part silent and calm. No one was more than 30 years, and the long hair and colorful clothes were almost compulsory ….
Un fenomeno, forse non molto conosciuto, è quello delle “Tribute bands” (e “Acoustic bands”) nate in diverse nazioni, e che sono composte da musicisti che portano in giro il repertorio delle canzoni dei Beatles. Molte, con bravi interpreti, si limitano ad eseguire le composizioni, alcune delle quali ormai riconoscibili ai più sin dalle prime note. Altre invece cercano di ricreare l’atmofera di quegli anni, non solo eseguendo al meglio le canzoni, ma anche facendo ricerche accurate sugli strumenti e sull’abbigliamento vintage, arrivando ad acquistare, quando possibile, gli strumenti originali, e molti degli accessori.
Una di queste band, che figura tra le più famose in Italia, ma è anche conosciuta a livello internazionale (recentissimo il loro concerto del 5/4/2014 al Palais di Bruxelles davanti a 15.000 persone), è quella dei Beatbox, che abbiamo avuto il piacere di ascoltare dal vivo e che con il loro spettacolo ricreano sicuramente bene l’atmosfera di quegli anni.

Al Fim abbiamo assistito all’interessantissima conferenza tenuta da Eddie Kramer, che fu il produttore ed ingegnere del suono di Hendrix, ma non solo, anche di David Bowie, dei Led Zeppelin, dei Rolling Stones, etc. ed eccezionalmente di due pezzi dei Beatles.
Eddie Kramer è stato ospite quest’anno al FIM – Fiera Internazionale della Musica, a Genova dove è stato premiato come“Best Studio Sound Engineer”.
Si devono infatti a lui alcuni grandi successi per i quali realizzo’ effetti speciali e molto innovativi per l’epoca.
L’emozione che ho provato nell’ascoltare il racconto di questo 71enne magro e molto in forma, dalla vita piena ed entusiasmante, col suo meraviglioso inglese (prontamente tradotto dall’interprete accanto a lui), corredato da una ricca proiezione di diapositive rigorosamente d’epoca, non si può descrivere! Abbiamo ammmirato praticamente uno show sulla storia del rock (di cui egli è stato uno dei grandi protagonisti durante un arco di tempo durato oltre 50 anni), la sua grande collezione di foto tratte da Woodstock, abbiamo ascoltato gli aneddoti sulla sua amicizia col grande Jimi, lo abbiamo visto ritratto giovane a lavorare con i suoi mixers e registratori a 4, 8, 32 tracce… con tutti questi grandi artisti ed abbiamo ascoltato battute e commenti, oltre a brani delle canzoni che tutti amiamo.
Con i Beatles, in particolare, registrò a Londra “All you need is love” e “Baby you’re a rich man”. Pensare ed immaginare la sua esperienza con loro, per dei fan dei Beatles, può essere veramente un’esperienza unica!
Alla fine dello show ci siamo sono complimentati con lui e, dato che ha confessato di apprezzare molto la nostra pizza, Rita gli ha augurato buon appetito e divertimento in Italia, nonchè di proseguimento di carriera, visto che intende realizzare presto nuovi progetti.

At Fim we partecipated to the interesting lecture by Eddie Kramer, who was the producer and sound engineer for Hendrix, but not only, even for David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, etc.. and exceptionally for two Beatles’s songs.
Eddie Kramer was a guest at this year’s FIM – International Fair of Music, in Genoa, where he was awarded as the “Best Studio Sound Engineer”.
Infact, some of the great successes for which he realized special very innovative effects for its time are due to him.
You can not describe the emotion I felt listening to the story of this 71 year old, slim and very fit gentleman, with a full and exciting life, speaking a wonderful English (readily translated by the interpreter next to him), accompanied by an extensive slide show with photos of the era! We practically admired a show about the history of rock (of which he was one of the great men behind a period that lasted over 50 years old), his large collection of photos from Woodstock, we heard anecdotes about his friendship with great Jimi, we saw a young portrait of him working with his mixers and 4, 8, 32 tracks tape recorders, … we listened to jokes and comments, as well as tracks of the songs that we all love.
With the Beatles, in particular, he recorded “All you need is love” and “Baby you’re a rich man” in London. Thinking and imagining his experience with them, for Beatles fans can be a truly unique experience!
At the end of the show we complimented with him and, as he confessed he is very fond of our pizza, Rita wished him good appetite and fun in Italy, as well as the continuation of his career, since he intends to put on new projects soon.

Quest’anno presenta le “Nuove generazioni”: ieri sera lo abbiamo ascoltato con grande entusiasmo. In questa foto Beppe è con Aoife O’Donovan famosa chitarrista e cantante, Rushad Eggleston famoso ed eclettico violoncellista e Mike Witcher famoso suonatore di dobro (o chitarra resofonica). Un’emozione vederli suonare e cantare insieme. Un momento particolarmente gradito è stata l’esecuzione della mitica “Turn! Turn! Turn” con musica di Pete Seeger su parole dell’Ecclesiaste (dalla Bibbia) resa famosa ai tempi dei Beatles dai Byrds come raccontiamo a pagina 36 del nostro libro “MEMORIE BEATLESIANE e dintorni”.

The famous famous Genoese guitar virtuoso and singer and Beppe Gambetta and now an international star folk/country inspired , every year always brings to Genoa, for his Acoustic Nights, new and interesting guests.
This year he presents the “New Generations”: last night we listened to them with great enthusiasm. This photo pictures him with Aoife O’Donovan famous guitarist and singer, Rushad Eggleston famous and eclectic cellist and Mike Witcher, famous dobro player (or resophonic guitar). It was thrill to see them play and sing together. A particularly pleasing moment was the performance of the legendary “Turn! Turn! Turn” with music by Pete Seeger and words from Ecclesiaste (from the Bible) made famous at the Beatles times by the Byrds as we explain on page 36 of our book “MEMORIE BEATLESIANE e dintorni”.

Andammo a vedere il concerto dei Kraftwerk alla Round House di Londra del 10 ottobre 1976 con luci ed effetti speciali (per quel periodo). Avrebbero suonato pezzi da “Autobahn”, “Radioactivity” e il famoso “Trans Europe Express”, già un mito musicale, ma anche confine tra le ultime sonorità hippie e l’iniziale invadenza delle tecnologie segnata dai ritmi robotici. They played “Autobahn”, “Radioactivity” and the famous “Trans Europe Express” already a music hit, but also a border line between the latest hippie sounds and the early invasion of technology marked by the robotic rhythms. Questa città tedesca rappresenta una svolta importante nella vita dei futuri Beatles…
